I had a double (each patty "about" a sixth of a pound pre-cooked), no cheese, with onions, pickles and tomatoes, wrapped in lettuce. While the beef probably isn't grass-fed or pastured, as is my preference, it was tasty. Yay for me!
This was a good dry run for vacation in few weeks when I'll be away from my normal places, most notably my own kitchen. Now's the time to do a little strategery, er, planning.
Just now I did a quick search on the term paleo on the road.
The first blog I hit was from this woman who thought ahead for some of her meals and asked for special preparations at restaurants. I look forward to reading more entries in this blog, particularly since one of the authors is diabetic (type I).
I'll hunt around more and if I find anything good, I'll be sure to share it with you. In the meantime, if you have any great suggestions, I'm taking them. Here are some things to keep in mind:
- As I've stated before, I have metabolic syndrome with the star of the show being hyperinsulinemia (super high levels of serum insulin, a.k.a. insulin resistance) so I try to stay away from fruit and any potatoes, including sweet. I'm not diabetic, but it might be easier to just think I am.
- I loathe anything that came from the water – fish, shellfish (mild allergy there), seaweed. Loathe is too mild a term here.
- I am not at all a fan of jerky. I've tried. I really have. I nearly always make the urping noise a cat or dog makes before it deposits something nasty on the floor.
- No dairy. Yeah, I've said I'm no paleo purist, but I have my reasons. Two of them.
- Mild intolerance. For me, cheese = bloat. When dairy beyond butter and ghee is part of my diet, I don't lose weight. And I need to lose weight.
- It's not kind to glucose/insulin/metabolic issues. I heart cheese in a most monstrous way. I have to admit I slip now and then, but I'd rather not plan it in.
- Since I'm significantly overweight still, I need to take it easy on nuts. I think. Or so they say. You can tell I have my reservations about that one. So, yeah, nuts will figure into the travel plan.
- I will be flying.
- I will have access to a full kitchen when I land.
- I will have access to a grocery store.
- I will still eat in restaurants, particularly when sight-seeing.
Traveling is hard sometimes. Definitely check out hempseed nuts. Great amount of protein by weight and good-for-you fats. A good option to have at your fingertips before you get so hungry that you make bad choices. Hemp is the Future Variety Pack is on option for it. The Good Earth has several as well.
ReplyDeleteAlso, eggs are available everywhere. Usually you can get some kind of omelet with veggies and meat. I bet they'll even hold the cheese for you so that you don't cut it later. See what I did there? So funny.
The other key that I have been practicing with our baker Loretta O. is asking them to hold the stuff I don't want to be tempted by. If I don't, I end up eating at least part of it if not all of it. Better to just not have it in front of me and if they forget, I ask them to take it away. I'm always very honest. I say, "I want there to be less of me and this isn't going to help. Will you save me from it?" or something equally as goofy.
One last suggestion, go in with a list of things that you will let yourself have, might allow yourself once or twice, things that you'll not allow yourself, and things that will likely kill you should you ingest them. That way there is no space for compulsion. That is one of my biggest issues, the sudden decision to eat something and the guilt that follows.
You'll do great. Forewarned is forearmed... I wish it were four-armed, but that's just not how it works. Regardless, use the grocery and just know that you can find adequately healthy food.
