Hello my fine paleo friends. Today's long overdue post is about what's up in Nila's world, relevant to eating. (You're welcome.) It's a short story really. And more of the same. It goes like this...
Hi, my name is Nila and I have a problem with eating. Sometimes I eat in a way that makes my body really happy. Sometimes I eat in a way that makes my mouth and brain really, really happy for really short periods of time. For the first 2/3 of August, I ate in the latter way. I gained 9 pounds. My doctor whipped me with her stethoscope. And I went back to eating in the former way. I lost 9 pounds. In 5 days. Yeah.
Okay, it's deeper than that really. I know through trial and error that gluten-y foods and dairy (except ghee, baby) do funny things to my body. Call it allergy. Call it intolerance. Pick another label. It really doesn't matter. I get systemic inflammation - joints, sinuses, skin, and so on. My body retains scads of fluids. I don't feel so hot.
But Jesus (pronounced Hay-Soos) I love me some cheese and bread and pasta. So inevitably some little thing will trigger me into thinking "hey, I can have just a little bite of that grilled cheese sandwich." And that little mouth party triggers another such "it's okay just this once." The next thing you know I've Just-This-Onced myself into days, weeks or months of Just-This-Once three times a day. Then I come to my senses, typically at the sting of my doctor's stethoscope, and give it up cold turkey. For a few days I pout. I look longingly at fettucini alfredo or cheese pizza as if they were some unrequited love. Then something miraculous happens. I realize that my joints move better, my rings are loose on my fingers and there's a spring in my step. That's exactly where I am now. You know what? It feels a hell of a lot better than the grilled cheese.
If you ever see me Just-This-Oncing, will you please remind of this?
